Morgan Lewis, 25
Born: Santa Clara, California.

My birth was a long journey. I didn’t have very far to go but for some reason it took me 18 hours to leave my mother’s womb. That’s my mom up there, yep, the one with the wings. She’s used those a lot over the years to get from place to place. That’s me down there in the net. I think I know why it took me so long to be born, well it was my mermaid tail, not to make excuses or anything, but there wasn’t much space in that birth canal for me and my fluke.

Mom’s wings really came in in handy 7 1/2 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her flight through life became more intense. Only she can explain what it felt like to be threatened with cancer. Rough landings were not uncommon; however, Mom’s strength amazed us all.

My mom continues her flight. She has spent the past 2 1/2 years defending Headwaters Forest, the last remaining old growth forest in Northern California. This forest is threatened by the cancerous bonds of corrupt logging companies and weak politics. The creation you see before you represents the mother/daughter bond which my mother and I share. It is a celebration of life.
