My Mother Does Not Like Pen Marks,
by Megan McMurrin

My mother does not like pen marks
ink seeping, staining skin
pen marks on any body parts
surely a great sin

ink seeping, staining skin
letting the ink contaminate
surely a great sin
I never never never thought that ink would mark her fate

letting the ink contaminate
They mark her; forehead, neck and ears
I never never never thought that ink would mark her fate
lines of purple and white gown all she wears.

They mark her; forehead, neck and ears
these marks, they do delineate
lines of purple and white gown all she wears.
so they radiate.

These marks they do delineate
possible pathways the cancer creeps
so they radiate
as the ink slowly seeps

possible pathways the cancer creeps
the machine envelops with intent to burn
as the ink slowly seeps
in the skin as the burn begins

the machine envelops with intent to burn
the light penetrates
in the skin as the burn begins
to radiate

the light penetrates
the cancer? Stay still! They start
to radiate
the ink the cancer chart

the cancer? Stay still! They start
along the temporal, occipital bones
the ink the cancer chart
maps the spread of cancers’ home

along the temporal, occipital bones
the pain persistently embeds
maps the spread of cancers’ home
on vast plain of hairless head

the pain persistently embeds
along purplish longitude lines which run
on vast plain of hairless head
It is done.

along purplish longitude lines which run
as she scrubs them leaving streaks
It is done.
but beneath her clothes the tattoos peek

as she scrubs them leaving streaks
she wishes the scrubs to eradicate
but beneath her clothes the tattoos peek
an emblem of the radiate

she wishes the scrubs to eradicate
black stains sprawling across white
an emblem of the radiate
if you hold the x-rays to the light

black stains sprawling across white
unwashable stains that cancer spills
if you hold the x-rays to the light
black marks bone that cancer kills

unwashable stains that cancer spills
black marks
black marks bone that cancer kills
pain starts

black marks
pen marks on any body parts
pain starts
my mother does not like pen marks
