Nature's Role in My Healing,
by Gloria Robinson

I write this from the beach at Kaanapali, Maui where I have come to finish recuperating from the treatements I received after being diagnosed with breast cancer on Feb. 5, 1999. Coming here to this wonderful island of Maui, to this beach in particular, was the dream that kept me going through all the months of radiation and chemotheraphy and all their side effects.

At home, my garden played a very significant role in my recovery. As early spring came, I began seeking out my plants and the earth as a source of strength and healing, and in return I was rewarded with beatiful, healthy shrubs and flowers. Some days I did not have much strength to even dig a hole, but the garden was always there for me to sit and enjoy.

The swing in my garden, under the shade of a pine and japanese maple, was the place where I sat with my Yorkie, Katie, and spent my days and evenings watching my flowers bloom and dreaming of coming here to Maui.

The clear, warm waters of Kaanapali surrounded me with good health, energy, a renewed appetite and healing. Kaanapali Beach will hold a special place in my heart forever and as I say Aloha to this bit of paradise in the middle of the Pacific, I again look forward to my welcoming garden at home where I will continue to nurture myself and my soul.
