Carolyn McMurrin
Born: Randolph Co., Asheboro, North Carolina

Fighting breast cancer for the past seven years, Carolyn McMurrin appreciates that which brings her joy. This apron embodies the peace and happiness that the beautiful colors and textures bring her. Growing up in rural North Carolina, Carolyn learned to sew from her hardworking mother. She has sewn clothes and quilts off and on her whole life, however the work she had done the past few years seem to explode with the new-found creativity and experimentation she developed after her 1992 diagnosis.

In the beginning, Carolyn did not have elaborate plans for her apron, yet as she continued to work on it ideas began to unfold. Much of her work contains symbolism and meaning for her personally. For example, after her diagnosis she realized that she was going to have to "cut the apron strings" in her life and let go of many things previously taken for granted. Also, the back of the apron is mostly black and white, representing her life before cancer. Yet now she views the world with emotions as beautiful yet often as complex and unexpected as those on the front of her apron.
