| Health Care for Women There are many benefits to choosing a health care professional focused on women's health care and it is your right to have access to non-physician providers, including Physicians Assistants (PA's) and advance practice nurses, such as Nurse Practitioners (NP's) and Certified Nurse Midwives. These primary health care professionals provide a valuable resource to the community and research has shown that these alternatives provide high quality, cost-effective care that results in a high level of patient satisfaction. Of the approximately 50,000 Nurse Practitioners in the United States, over 8,400 reside in California. In addition to providing primary health care, NPs are skilled in communication, teaching, and counseling. NPs are registered nurses who possess additional preparation, skills, and licenses to provide health services independently and in collaboration with a variety of other health care providers, including physicians. They serve as health care resources, interdisciplinary consultants and patient advocates. There are more than 28,000 Physicians Assistants in clinical practice, many of whom provide health care specifically for women. PAs practice with the supervision of a physician and are able to diagnose and treat illnesses, perform physical examinations, write prescriptions, assist in surgery, and provide patient education and counseling. Many patients choose NPs and PAs for their regular health care provider because they provide individualized care, emphasize wellness and charge competitive fees which are covered by health insurance programs. Check with your health insurance provider for a list of physicians assistants and advanced practice nurses in your area. |
